The Doherty Group President - Brendan P. Doherty
Brendan Doherty is the president of The Doherty Group - a leader in business security services - based in Providence, Rhode Island. Brendan Doherty spent 28 years in the Rhode Island State Police, retiring in 2011, as Superintendent holding the rank of Colonel. During his tenure as Superintendent he was also appointed the first ever Commissioner of Public Safety for the state of Rhode Island by then Governor Donald L. Carcieri. Earlier in his investigative career, then Detective Doherty focused on Organized Crime and Public Corruption. He testified in numerous high-profile cases in Federal and R.I. Superior Court resulting in the dismantling of several factions of New England Organized Crime.
In 2003, then Major Doherty was instrumental in the criminal investigation and separately the family support of victims in the Station Fire in which 100 people perished as a result of a Rhode Island night club fire. That tragic event would forever serve as a reminder to him the major need for assistance and guidance for victims of crime and their families.
Throughout his career, Brendan was assigned to investigate and oversee numerous public corruption cases which required a high level of surveillance services and witness interviews, coupled with court authorized wire intercepts or grand jury proceedings. Also, during his career, Brendan supervised numerous witness protection details and was assigned to high profile dignitary or personal security details.
Brendan started the State Police Community Outreach Program reaching out to inner-city youth with basketball programs, baseball clinics, mentorships and coaching boy’s and girls’ sports. He also started the Kids Cops and Christmas Event along with the Kids Cops and Classroom Event that provided hundreds of gifts and book bags to children in need annually at The State House. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Heart Association, The Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln, Crossroads RI and Big Brothers of RI.
After retiring from the State Police, Brendan served as the Director of Public Safety at Roger William’s University for three years and was a candidate for US Congress in 2012. He also served as a Director of the Special Investigations Unit at Blue Cross Blue Shield Rhode Island focusing on healthcare fraud from 2013-2019.
Brendan has been the recipient of numerous awards for his community service including the NAACP Humanitarian Award, Big Brothers Humanitarian Award, Boys and Girls Club “Champion of Youth” Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Providence Chapter of ASIS International (American Society for Industrial Security), RI Red Cross Longfellow/Life Saving Award and Bishop Feehan High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the RI Criminal Justice Hall of Fame.
Aside from running the security consulting services at the Doherty Group, Brendan continues to serve on numerous boards and commissions.
